Methodology
An inquiry that can criticize its own conditions.
The methodology of the inepistemic project: explicit commitments, human direction, and knowledge that returns to change the next question.
Methodological commitments
Make epistemic assumptions explicit enough to criticize
Do not allow consequential assumptions about problems, knowledge, explanation, evidence, or criticism to disappear invisibly into system behavior.
Keep the human epistemically superordinate
Artificial systems may generate, transform, retrieve, compare, and criticize candidate structures. They do not thereby inherit authority over which problem matters or which successor problem should govern the inquiry.
Permit criticism to transform the problem
Do not constrain criticism to improving solutions inside a frame that criticism itself may defeat.
Let objective knowledge return
Externalized artifacts should remain capable of entering later problem situations rather than existing only as terminal outputs.
Preserve enough ancestry for later criticism
Do not allow the latest representation to erase the distinctions, unresolved burdens, or earlier criticisms on which it depends.
Make recursion criticizable
When theory shapes architecture and architecture shapes inquiry, permit the results of that inquiry to return as criticism of the theory.
Do not mistake operation for validation
A functioning system does not validate the grounding epistemology. Operational consequences create tests, not authority.
Recursive epistemic production
The architectural conjecture
If epistemic assumptions materially govern how a system processes knowledge, those assumptions should be explicit enough to become operational and criticizable.

inepistemic was produced by making selected epistemic commitments operational in a human–AI working environment, applying them to a live inquiry, and exposing them to criticism through the work that environment helped produce. Epistemology did not merely interpret the book afterward; it participated in the conditions of the book's creation.
When a conjecture shapes an operating environment, its consequences can expose ambiguities, contradictions, missing relations, unusable abstractions, or assumptions that survive in prose but fail in use. The methodology therefore treats operationalization as a form of criticism, not as validation of the epistemology.
The epistemic harness, Explanata, made selected commitments operative inside an agent environment. The AI model was not simply prompted to produce finished answers; it participated within a larger epistemic system whose governing structure was not supplied by the model alone. The Inventions page explains this implementation.
The human remains the epistemic operator
Human
- Originates problems
- Architects inquiry
- Criticizes and judges progress
- Selects direction and reframes criteria
The machine may produce material.
The human retains epistemic direction.
AI
- Generates candidates
- Retrieves and compares
- Reconstructs structures
- Suggests criticisms and successor problems

The creative person remains the problem originator, architect, critic, author, and selector of epistemic direction. The artificial system can obediently generate candidate explanations, variations, comparisons, retrievals, reconstructions, possible criticisms, successor problems, and inspectable structures. The human remains freely disobedient: able to reject proposals, alter criteria or framing, supply domain knowledge and criticism, judge explanatory progress, and redirect the inquiry toward a different problem.
This asymmetry is not determined by the proportion of text or artifacts produced by either participant. A machine may produce much of the visible material while the human participates across epistemology, technology, problem selection, reconstruction, criticism, and direction. Machine participation does not confer ownership of epistemic direction.
The Explainable Human
A supporting domain methodology, The Explainable Human, governed human-facing technology within the working environment. It is not a methodology for explaining human beings. It constrains how systems may observe, represent, classify, predict, assist, or otherwise interact with a person, opposing an epistemic inversion in which a necessarily incomplete system representation is promoted above the person represented.
Representations must remain provisional and criticizable. The human must retain the capacity to reject a framing, change a criterion, reformulate a problem, redirect an interaction, and, where the application permits, refuse or exit. An earlier form of The Explainable Human helped govern the environment in which inepistemic developed. The resulting book, in turn, offered a stronger account of the singular person as historically developing, open-ended, and capable of creating, criticizing, and reconstructing knowledge—an account that could be applied back to the methodology.

Read the explanation
The methodology does not assume that the original problem remains fixed. A failed explanation may expose a mistaken criterion, missing distinction, misleading abstraction, or even the wrong object of inquiry. Criticism can therefore produce a changed problem, rather than merely a better solution to the old one.
The familiar relation
maps problem, tentative solution, criticism or error elimination, and successor problem. It is not a rigid workflow or the methodological center; the essential commitment is that criticism may change what becomes worth asking next.
The book did not begin with a fully specified table of contents. Later problems emerged from earlier attempts, some sharpened, some displaced, and some only made visible by failure. The book's structure is partly a record of that problem trajectory, not merely a sequence of surviving conclusions. The Inventions page describes how the inquiry's changing problems were handled in the working environment.

Inexplicit or partial explanatory structures can be externalized into objective artifacts that are inspectable, persistent, and available for reconstruction. Their methodological importance is not merely that they can be stored or retrieved. On returning to a later inquiry, an artifact can be criticized, rejected, extended, or reconstructed by a changing human participant; that encounter may change what the person notices, understands, or asks next, leading to further artifacts.
AI reduces the cost of generating, comparing, retrieving, and re-presenting such structures. The epistemic significance, however, lies in their return to a changing human problem situation, not in the quantity of outputs produced.
This return requires preservation of explanatory ancestry. If each new state overwrites the conditions that made it possible, earlier distinctions, failed conjectures, criticisms, and unresolved burdens disappear from later scrutiny. The requirement is not to keep every intermediate artifact, but to preserve enough structure to distinguish continuation, qualification, contradiction, extension, reopening, and transformation. Explanatory continuity concerns relations, not identical wording.

The strongest recursion returns to the epistemology itself:
Here is the current epistemic framework and an architecture shaped by it. The architecture enters actual inquiry; its practical and explanatory consequences can reveal problems in the framework, the methodology, or the technology. Criticism can then inform revised epistemic conditions. This is operational recursion, not a claim that repeated application produces truth. A recursive system may preserve or amplify error. Its critical value arises because the same commitments acquire different, inspectable consequences at the levels of theory, architecture, inquiry, and artifact.
The book itself is one such artifact. It discusses problems and successor problems, explanation and criticism, objective and inexplicit knowledge, epistemic motion, tools and abstractions, and human–AI collaboration—structures that also participated in its production. This correspondence makes the book a possible source of criticism of the explanatory architecture through which it was created.
Relationship to the technology
Explanata
Made selected epistemic commitments operative in the environment that helped produce the book.
Kinematic Data Modeling
Created a distinct, source-preserving representation for further analysis and criticism.
Read the explanation
Explanata participated in the inquiry that produced the book. Kinematic Data Modeling (KDM) was applied after the book was complete, creating a distinct, source-preserving structured representation through which further analysis could expose new criticisms. KDM was not a stage of the original production methodology. The Inventions page explains both systems, their different roles, and their operating mechanisms.
Visual and Video Production
The images associated with inepistemic were generated using ChatGPT independently of the Explanata environment. These images were subsequently used to produce videos with Gemini Omni.
